DU Architects



Born in 1964, Robert Thibodeau is a founder and principal partner of DU Architects, which he began with his wife Yasi Vafai in 1995 in order to provide high-quality, custom, contemporary design.

DU Architects, based in Venice, prides itself on its pure and integral architectural vision to create simple, functional, modern yet warm and comfortable spaces.

Robert received a Bachelor of Arts in architecture from the University of California Berkeley in 1986 and attended SCI-ARC’s Master’s Program from 1989 to 1993, graduating with distinction.

In 1992, while in graduate school, he won sixth place in the Nara Japan International Design Competition, which had over a thousand entries.

Robert has taught at SCI-ARC, Otis School of Design and University of California, Irvine and his work has been published in leading design and architecture publications including Wallpaper, New Southern California Architecture (Japanese publication) and The Los Angeles Times Magazine on numerous occasions.

Born in 1965 in Iran, Yasi Vafai is a founder and principal partner of du Architects.

Yasi’s professional experience includes working with Frank O Gehry and Assoc., Narduli / Grinstein, Kappe Architects and Planners, Ellerbe Beckett, AKS-RUNO, Michele Saee, and Paul Lubowiki.

She received a Bachelor’s degree in architecture from SCI-ARC in 1990 and has taught at SCI-ARC, Otis School of Design and University of California Irvine. Yasi’s project for a photographer’s studio was featured in the March 2, 2008 Los Angeles Times Magazine.

DU Architects received an award in 2000 for architectural design from the City of Beverly Hills for the design and build of restaurant, Reign and the firm’s custom residences have been included on notable architectural home tours such as the AIA Home Tour in 2005 and The Caboom Tour of Architectural Homes in 2006, 2007, and 2008.

Robert and Yasi live with their five-year old son Lucas on a Venice walk street in a three-bedroom two-story home they completed in early 2006. The firm has designed and built three further homes on the same walk street and a dozen more in the surrounding neighborhood. Their studio is on Abbot Kinney Blvd in Venice.
